The World

Wraeclast

A cursed continent where people are sent to die. Oriath ships its criminals and outcasts there, and nobody is expected to return. The land is soaked in old magic and old mistakes, and the dead rarely stay quiet.

Oriath

An island nation off the coast, ruled for much of the story by the Templar theocracy. Its leaders preach purity while exiling anyone inconvenient, which is how your character ends up washed ashore.

The Eternal Empire

Wraeclast's great human empire, centered on the city of Sarn. It grew rich and arrogant by harnessing power from virtue gems, which turned ordinary people into near-gods. That ambition ended in the Cataclysm, an event that wiped out the Empire overnight and left monsters in its place.

The Vaal

An even older civilization that ruled before the Empire. Led at the end by Queen Atziri and her thaumaturge Doryani, the Vaal chased immortality through blood, corruption and forbidden science. Their own Cataclysm erased them, and their ruins still hold dangerous secrets.

The Gods and the Beast

The gods of Wraeclast were once mortals who gained divine power, and they were sealed away long ago. Beneath the land lies the Beast, a vast living mass whose blood feeds corruption. Many of the setting's disasters trace back to people trying to tap its power.

The Atlas, Shaper, Elder and Maven

The Atlas of Worlds is a realm of memories and possible places, reachable through maps. The Shaper was a scholar who learned to bend it to his will; the Elder is a void-born entity he fought for ages. The Maven is a cosmic being who collects and watches powerful creatures fight for her amusement, and later becomes an uneasy ally.

The Searing Exarch and the Eater of Worlds

Two eldritch horrors drawn to the Atlas once the Elder falls. The Exarch serves a consuming fire of knowledge; the Eater serves a writhing tangle of hunger. Commander Kirac recruits exiles to hold them back, with the Maven as the only power that treats us as more than insects.

The Setting of Path of Exile 2

PoE 2 jumps about twenty years after the first game. A spreading corruption, tied to a mysterious seed and a figure called the Hooded One, is creeping back across Wraeclast. The new exile travels from the Ezomyte highlands to the desert, the Vaal jungle and the Karui islands to stop it.

Path of Exile 1: Act-by-Act

  1. Act 1, the Coast: You wash up on the shore, survive the drowned dead and push inland to defeat the siren Merveil.
  2. Act 2, the Forest: You help or fight the bandit lords and enter a Vaal pyramid to stop the Vaal Oversoul.
  3. Act 3, Sarn: In the ruined imperial city you uncover the Templars' crimes and confront High Templar Dominus.
  4. Act 4, the Aqueduct and Highgate: You descend into the Beast and kill Malachai and the organs of the sleeping beast.
  5. Act 5, Oriath: You return home to overthrow the Templars, then face the god Kitava.
  6. Act 6: Back on Wraeclast, you clean up threats you left behind, including the Brine King, and set up the war with the gods.
  7. Act 7: You chase a story of loss and grief in the Crypt and Dread Thicket, ending with the goddess of the dead, Arakaali.
  8. Act 8: In a poisoned Sarn you face the Twin Gods Solaris and Lunaris.
  9. Act 9: In the desert you fight the bloody Depraved Trinity to reach the heart of the Beast.
  10. Act 10: You return to Oriath, now in ruins, for a final battle with Kitava. Then the Atlas opens.

The Atlas Endgame Story

After the campaign, you run maps on the Atlas. Over many expansions the story moved from the Shaper to the Elder, then to the Maven and finally to the Searing Exarch and the Eater of Worlds. Each storyline adds bosses, items and a passive tree for the Atlas itself. Grinding Gear Games' own Lore Stories: Siege of the Atlas post explains the design of that arc.

Path of Exile 2: Act-by-Act

  1. Act 1, Ogham: A highland region ruled by a mad Count. You meet the first traces of the corruption and the Hooded One.
  2. Act 2, the Vastiri desert: You travel with the Maraketh caravan, chase a raiding force across the dunes and learn more about who the Hooded One really is.
  3. Act 3, the Vaal jungle: With an explorer named Alva, you search ancient Vaal ruins, travel back in time to a living Vaal city and confront Doryani.
  4. Act 4, the Karui Archipelago: With Doryani in tow, you sail the southern islands hunting the parts of an ancient weapon against corruption.

PoE 2 is still in early access, so later acts and story details may change.

Beginner Knowledge

Leagues

Every few months a new league launches with a fresh economy and a new mechanic. Your old characters move to the permanent Standard league. Most of the community plays the newest league.

Hardcore and SSF

In Hardcore, a dead character is moved to the standard league and can't be used in Hardcore again, so you get one life. Solo Self-Found (SSF) blocks trading and parties, so you find every item yourself. Hardcore SSF is the purest test, and it fits the War Room spirit.

The Passive Tree

A huge web of passive nodes shared by every class; your class only decides where you start. Plan a route toward a few key nodes instead of grabbing everything nearby. Ascendancy classes add a second, smaller tree you unlock through trials.

Gems and Links

In PoE 1, skills come from gems socketed into gear. Support gems change a skill only when they sit in linked sockets, so a six-link chest is the classic big upgrade. In PoE 2, support gems go into the skill gem itself instead of linked gear sockets.

The Atlas

Maps are items you put into a device to open endgame zones. Finishing them unlocks more of the Atlas and Atlas passive points that steer the content you see.
